KEIKI SUPERCHEF FINALIST CHOSEN...
Seventh grader Hunter Nohea Shiraishi of Oahu, who heard about the contest during a morning news broadcast is 11 years old. He's full of life, loves to cook and wants to be a chef. In his spare time, Hunter works in the family smoke-house where he's been smoking up a storm since age 4. His winning recipe, "Hunters Time-Fo'-Grind Pineapple Fish Delight" included broiled ahi and brown rice served with a pineapple salsa and a side sesame ginger salad with smoked salmon & pineapple chunks. Hunter completes his recipe by serving it in a beautiful pineapple skin bowl. His 16 year old sister filmed and edited his way cool video for him.
Hunters counterpart, California finalist Rachel Keating is also 11 years old and hales from Bell Canyon, California. She found out about the contest while shopping with her Dad at the Whole Foods Market in Woodland Hills. Rachel wanted to be on the show to show kids and adults that food can be healthy and delicious at the same time. Her winning dish, "Pineapple Paradise", includes a healthy pasta over chicken with a special pineapple topping, a shrimp pineapple healthy lettuce wrap as well as a naturally sweetened pineapple smoothie drink. Rachel's grandma was the cameraperson (and Rachels biggest fan) for the video shoot, while her loving Dad offered up his sous-chef skills to help keep things rolling.
The lucky kids, will team up with celebrity "mentor chefs" Robert Ciborowski of Kapalua resort Ryan Luckey of Kapalua's famed Pineapple grill and compete in a live audience, Ironchef style cook-off for the title "Keiki SuperChef". Filming takes place during the Maui Pineapple Festival on September 16 at the Kahului Cannery.
